Short answer

What VW 505.01 means and what you must verify

VW 505.01 is a Volkswagen Group engine-oil requirement used for certain engine and service applications. It is not a general label for every Volkswagen diesel: confirm the exact manual requirement, engine code, service interval and current product evidence.

01

Separate the OEM requirement from viscosity

Many oils can share an SAE grade such as 5W-40 while carrying different performance statements. When a manual requires VW 505.01, a matching viscosity without the exact VW wording is not an equivalent.

Other VW numbers, including VW 505.00, must not be treated as spelling variants of 505.01. Use the number printed in the manual and keep the service regime in view.

02

Identify the exact vehicle requirement

Record the model year, engine code and fixed or variable service interval. Check whether the vehicle has a DPF and whether the manual gives a different standard for that configuration.

A model name such as Volkswagen, Audi, Škoda or SEAT is too broad for a fitment decision. Different engines within one model range can require different oil standards.

  • manual wording and engine code;
  • SAE grade and service interval;
  • emissions hardware, including DPF where fitted;
  • exact product name, TDS and approval evidence.
03

Verify how the product evidence is worded

Open the record for the exact MOEVE product and check its current TDS. If a formal approval is required, distinguish the approval record from wording such as “meets requirements” or “recommended for”.

The related product record helps with comparison, but it is not a universal vehicle recommendation. Any uncertainty should be resolved against the current manufacturer documentation.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Are VW 505.01 and VW 505.00 the same?

No. Do not substitute one number for the other. Follow the exact standard stated in the vehicle documentation.

Does every 5W-40 oil meet VW 505.01?

No. Viscosity and OEM requirements are separate fields. Check the exact wording and evidence for the specific product.

Can I choose from the VW 505.01 label without the engine code?

Not safely for an individual vehicle. The engine code, manual, service interval and emissions configuration are needed for verification.

Limitations

Limitations

  • The guide does not provide vehicle-by-vehicle fitment and does not replace the Volkswagen Group documentation.
  • A product mention is not a claim about stock, price, delivery or market availability.
