Viscosity and approvals: what to check before choosing
Why the same 5W-30 label is not enough to choose an oil.
Start with the equipment requirements
Find the oil requirements in your equipment manual. In the catalogue, check the application, viscosity, ACEA/API and manufacturer requirement. Matching one parameter does not confirm compatibility.
Distinguish viscosity from approval
SAE describes the viscosity grade. Two 5W-30 oils may have different specifications and applications. An OEM number in the description alone does not prove official approval: “meets” and “approved” have different meanings.
Check the document for the specific product
Open the selected product page and its available technical documents. Compare the exact specification designation with the equipment manual. If confirmation is missing, send an enquiry with the product name and manufacturer requirement.
