Short answer
TDS or SDS: what each lubricant document is for
A TDS describes the product’s technical properties, stated performance and intended uses. An SDS describes hazards, safe handling, storage and emergency measures. They answer different questions, so one document cannot replace the other.
Use the TDS for technical comparison
A Technical Data Sheet can list viscosity grades, typical physical properties, performance categories, OEM wording and application statements. Read the exact wording and note whether a value is typical rather than a contractual limit.
The TDS helps compare a product with a manual requirement, but it is not a vehicle-fitment database. The engine or equipment documentation still decides what is required.
Use the SDS for safe handling and compliance
A Safety Data Sheet covers product identification, hazard classification, first aid, fire response, accidental release, handling, storage, exposure controls and disposal information.
The SDS must match the exact product and relevant market or language. An archived sheet for a similar name is not a safe substitute for the current document.
Verify identity, market and version
Start with the full MOEVE product name and product identifier. Check the issuer, language, date or revision and the product association before sharing a document or using it as evidence.
- exact product name and identifier;
- document type: TDS, SDS or approval record;
- issuer, language, date and revision;
- market or legal context where relevant;
- currentness confirmed at the time of the request.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
No. A TDS supports technical comparison; an SDS supports safe handling and hazard communication. Both may be needed for different parts of a purchase or audit.
Can a TDS confirm oil fitment for my vehicle?Not alone. It provides product facts to compare with the vehicle manual or an official licensed fitment source.
What if the current SDS is not shown on the product page?Request the current SDS for the exact product, market and language. Do not rely on an archived or similarly named document.
Limitations
Limitations
- This page explains document roles and does not state that an SDS is currently published for every product.
- Document availability, version and language must be confirmed for the exact product at the time of the request.
